Program Guide

What is 4-H?

4-H is an informal practical, learning-by-doing educational program for youth. Professional and volunteer staff provide educational projects and activities in shooting sports, animal science, family and consumer sciences, leisure arts, citizenship and leadership. It is the youth component of the University of Wyoming Extension of Natrona County.

What can I expect as a parent?

4-H develops skills that will last a lifetime by helping young people acquire self-discipline, a sense of responsibility, confidence, the ability to set goals, communication skills, record keeping skills and a better understanding of themselves and others. These things are taught with a framework of the Character Counts program; TRUSTWORTHY, RESPONSIBILITY, RESPECT, FAIRNESS, CARING and CITIZENSHIP.

Where can I go for help?

Monthly newsletters update you on upcoming activities and our County's schedule. Committee meetings are held for specific projects. Your club leader and our local 4-H staff are available along with a lending library. Information is available at the state 4-H website: 4-H.uwyo.edu.

What is a 4-H Project?

4-H offers something for everyone through 40 different topic areas. Some are: aerospace, beef, cake decorating, cat, dog, fabric and fashions, foods & nutrition, garden, goats, horse, leather, photography, poultry, rabbit, robotics, sheep, shooting sports, sport fishing, swine, vet science, visual arts, wildlife, woodworking.

There are clinics, contests & activities to support all projects in Wyoming 4-H. These help you gain knowledge and experiences that often open the doors to your future and lead to careers.

How do 4-H clubs work?

4-H is "learn by doing". You learn useful skills, how to get along with people and how to help in your community. We give youth a sense of belonging, mastery of a skill, independence & generosity. 4-H clubs are led by trained volunteers and meet during the year. (Most meet at our office at the ARLC.) We ask parents to attend with their child to get the maximum benefit.
